Description
Yes, I know...it's "Thunderbolt II." But to me it'll always be the Warthog.
Dad got this picture early in the A-10's career, at Sembach AB in West Germany, circa 1978. The A-10s were assigned to RAF Woodbridge, but Sembach was one of the forward operating bases in time of war, so we saw 'Hogs pretty much every day at the base. Then they were brand new aircraft, and something of an oddity compared to the older F-4s we saw, along with newer F-15s and F-16s.
Because Dad was well known around Sembach as a model builder, one of the crew chiefs let him take pictures of 77-0258 and climb all over it (there was nothing secret about the A-10, and still isn't). Because it was the 1970s, they let me come with Dad!
77-0258 wasn't long for the world; it crashed in 1981 while operating out of Sembach.
