P-51D Mustang

Description

The P-51 Mustang needs little introduction. Designed in less than six months in response to a British need for a day fighter, the P-51--once married to a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine--became the long-distance escort fighter the USAAF desperately needed. Highly manueverable, long ranged, and deadly, the P-51 is often considered one of the finest--if not *the* finest--fighter ever designed. The best known version is the P-51D, which was the most produced, with a cut-down rear fuselage and bubble canopy for superb all-around vision.

This is a late-war P-51, when nearly the entire Mustang force had gone to bare-metal finish to save weight. The group markings are spurious (there never was an 8th Air Force fighter group with powder-blue noses and the call letters "ZZ"). It's from a novel I'm hoping to publish soon; this P-51 is one of the main characters' aircraft. (There's three main characters: an American, a German, and an Englishman.)

This is pretty much a straight-out-of-the-box Monogram 1/48 P-51. It's also not my work--my dad built this one for me. He's much, MUCH better than me.
